Comparison study
30 portfolio platforms, one honest matrix
Smallcase, robo advisors, MPS models, discretionary PMS and adviser operating systems — compared on the same eleven questions, plus a capability scorecard per archetype. Figures are illustrative or secondary sources; validate against primary filings before external use.
The seven archetypes
What the customer receives, who controls execution, and how the money is made.
| Archetype | Customer receives | Execution control | Monetization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research model portfolio | Constituents, weights, rationale | Investor executes | Subscription / report |
| Investible basket | One-click multi-security buy | Broker after consent | Transaction, rev-share |
| Guided portfolio | Questionnaire to allocation | Investor approves | Subscription, referral, AUM |
| Automated advisory (robo) | Algorithm selects and maintains | Automated | AUM, subscription |
| Discretionary PMS/SMA | Manager decides on the account | Manager / custodian | AUM + performance |
| Marketplace | Many managers publish | Investor selects | Listing, subscription, transaction |
| Portfolio OS | Aggregation, tracking, tax, reporting | Execution-agnostic | Subscription, enterprise |
Smallcase sits at investible basket + marketplace + partial OS. It is not a discretionary PMS.

The lesson each platform teaches
One line each — what a builder should actually take away.
- Smallcase: distribution, workflow, trust, embedded execution and data are the moat — not stock picks. A lifecycle beats a one-time recommendation fee. (10M+ installs, 100k+ daily orders, per smallcase.com, Aug 2026.)
- Wealthfront: recurring AUM revenue is predictable and scalable but demands custody and trust.
- Betterment: advice has to connect to goals, not just securities — retention and suitability improve together.
- M1 Finance: customisation drives engagement but raises suitability and execution complexity; ecosystem revenue adds balance-sheet risk.
- UK MPS: risk profiling, suitability and governance sit at the centre of the product, not at the edge.
- Vanguard-style allocation: cost, transparency and diversification can beat stock selection outright.
- PMS/SMA: personalisation commands higher revenue but carries high operating cost and high minimums.
The white space PortfolioOS should own
Own these three and you become the layer the others plug into, not another basket shop.
- 1
Cross-broker portfolio accounting
Nobody gives the investor one honest consolidated view of everything they own.
- 2
Tax-aware cashability
Proceeds, settlement, slippage, per-lot tax and residual concentration — shown before the commitment, not after.
- 3
Explainability + manager governance
Explain my portfolio, a public conflict register, and quality-adjusted discovery. Trust as a feature, not a claim.
